My first Black MIDI was the opening theme of the anime, Fushigi Yuugi, "For My Loved One." It only consisted of about 102,916 notes in under a minute and 30 seconds. How did you get started making Black MIDI? I believe all that came from the idea of these "bullet hell" games. The MIDI part is MIDI, nothing special about it. The term "Black MIDI" was derived from a sheet music being "blacked out" by tons of notes. It actually falls under a remix category, rather than of electronic music. TheTrustedComputer: Black MIDI has been around since 2009. THUMP: What do you think Black MIDI is exactly? Through a series of YouTube messages, comments, and eventually email, TTC answered our burning questions about Black MIDI, taught us the basics for making a Black MIDI tune, and even made us an exclusive cut for the holiday season. His wiki is a Black MIDI bible-your source for Black MIDI everything, from leaderboards of tunes ranked by MIDI note count (the currently leader clocks in at 280 billion notes) to links to other Black MIDI champions like TheSuperMarioBros2, Gingeas, and RetroUniversalHT. Though he asked us not to reveal his full name, we do know that the 15-year-old Californian's leading video has over 1,361,551 views at the time of publication. But they're all quite active on YouTube, so I was able to contact TheTrustedComputer, aka TTC, one of Black MIDI's reigning kings and the moderator of The Impossible Music wiki. Tracking down the young note-wizards for an interview has proven difficult, because none of them have official websites with email contacts listed. There's so much visual info happening that your computer is likely to choke and sputter unless you've spent a couple Gs on a high-end graphics card. Tunes cram in "crash" notes-hyper-stutters where every key on the "piano" is "playing" thousands of times a second. Videos are appearing with mesmerizing patterns of criss-crossing notes representing insane scales flipping back and forth in front of your eyes. And once young dudes start competing in nerdiness, you know it's going to end up on YouTube. Many are based on the music from video games and cartoons, thanks to a healthy crossover in interest between blackers, anime heads and gamers. First it was 100K, then 500K, then a million-now upwards of five million notes are common. The "blackers" first cropped up in Japan in 2009, sharing videos on the Japanese video site Nico Nico Douga)Īccording to the Black MIDI Wiki page, the movement first spread to Korea and China, and in 2012 to the United States and Europe.īlackers across the globe, many of them teens and preteens, are embroiled in a ferocious game of one-upsmanship, battling to see how many notes they can cram into a single composition. The score won in the category "Best Original Score" at the Denver Film Society, while it was nominated in other events, including the Grammy Awards and the Saturn Awards. In many tracks is reprised Batman's main action theme ("Molossus"), used as well in the first two movies of the trilogy. Just like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight the main motif always consists in just two notes, played by horns and accompanied by strings, representing Batman's pain and guilt. It's not that I didn't add a lot, I did, but I don't think I added the aspects of the music that really defined the character of those movies". His conception of the scores was really brilliant. I mean, they really sounded the way they sounded because of him. Regarding his departure from the franchise, Howard said: "I just really felt that I had made what I felt like I could contribute to that series, and I always felt that. The main themes were composed by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, but Howard did not return to the series to score this film and was not credited as a composer. At that time, ships crossing the Atlantic were being sunk by U-boats so frequently that Jillian’s mother, renowned sculptor Una Hanbury (who was also Colin’s mentor and hero), faced the unthinkable but distinct possibility that one of the boats would likely go down. Born in London, she came to the United States as a young girl to escape the Blitz – the bombing of London in WWII. Jillian began her adventure in this world August 11, 1930. The theatre features classic and family films, concerts, plays and other entertainment, plus offers educational and community services to connect residents and visitors. She procured the funding within a couple days and did everything she said she was going to do.īeautifully restored, the Island Theatre, a performing arts center and community cornerstone, is now owned and operated by the nonprofit Chincoteague Island Arts Organization, which Jillian founded (with the impossibly cool acronym “CIAO” of course). She sounded so inspired! Then she said, “Well, all I need to do now is come up with $100,000 to purchase the building!” While outwardly supportive, inwardly my heart sank as I thought, “In these times and over the holidays? Oh, that’s going to be pretty near impossible.”īut, as I learned, I didn’t know Jillian then, and “pretty near impossible” is clearly a long way from impossible. Jillian had decided this movie house needed to be renovated and reinvented to become a cultural arts center that would benefit the local community. She was focused on a vintage movie house built in 1947 on Chincoteague Island that had fallen into serious disrepair – so much so that it was scheduled for demolition. It was Christmas time and we were chatting about her latest venture. I first met Jillian in 2008, in the midst the global financial crisis. Perhaps “lived” is simply too mild a word to describe the zeal and dynamism with which she blazed her path through creation, inspiring people from all walks of life to join in her vision of a reality in which artistry of all kinds would thrive, be celebrated and benefit the world. And she lived her life as a bold manifestation of this guiding principle. So said Colin’s mum, Jillian Hanbury Poole. Today, I want to share something more personal but strongly tied in to a life in art that may have a message for everyone. Update: Tweetbot has also shut down as a result of Twitter's ban. Twitterrific subscriptions through iOS have been cancelled, and Twitterrific is asking subscribers not to request a refund from Apple as the loss of the Twitterrific revenue will have a notable impact on the business, and thousands of refunds could be devastating. We are sorry to say that the app’s sudden and undignified demise is due to an unannounced and undocumented policy change by an increasingly capricious Twitter – a Twitter that we no longer recognize as trustworthy nor want to work with any longer. Until this afternoon, Twitterrific for Mac was still functional, as Twitter had not uniformly cut off third-party clients. The developers behind Twitterrific confirmed that the Twitterrific apps for iOS and Mac have been pulled from Apple's App Stores as of today. As Twitter has no communications team, little else is known about this situation. There have long been complaints about Twitter's own app and the web experience, with third-party clients able to offer a much more palatable interface for many.ĭevelopers had no notice that their revenue streams were going to be cut off, and they were not able to inform customers who paid for their apps about the shutdown. Third-party Twitter apps have been around for more than a decade, and they were a popular choice for those who do not care for the default Twitter interface. By cutting off third-party Twitter apps, Twitter will be able to serve ads to all users on its platforms. As it turns out, Twitter is implementing a policy change that simply blocks third-party clients.Īll popular Twitter clients such as Tweetbot and Twitterrific are no longer working, and the Twitter users that depended on these apps will now need to use the official Twitter app on iOS or Android or the Twitter experiences on the web. Third-party developers at no point received any communication from Twitter nor any warning about the shutdown, and Twitter never offered insight into what API rules might have been violated. Twitter remained quiet until Tuesday, when it cryptically said that it was "enforcing its long-standing API rules," a change that could cause some apps not to work. Last Thursday, Twitter stopped providing API access to major Twitter clients like Tweetbot, causing them to stop functioning, but at the time, provided no explanation as to why the APIs were suddenly unavailable. This wording effectively bans all third-party apps such as Tweetbot, Twitterrific, Aviary, Echofon, Birdie, and others, and makes it clear that third-party Twitter apps are not going to come back at this time. A new clause under Restrictions says that developers are not able to "create a substitute or similar service or product to the Twitter Applications." This week, I am going to pick the best Twitter app for the Mac.Twitter this week confirmed that it is no longer permitting third-party developers to create Twitter clients, with the information quietly shared in an updated developer agreement that was spotted by Engadget. While the Twitter website is fine for casual tweeting, people who use Twitter on desktop with any regularity will want a dedicated app. Because Twitter killed its official app for Mac last March, third-party apps are all you can use (except for TweetDeck). This week, I want to look at the best Twitter app for Mac. It’s really one of those “what’s best for you” situations. The great thing about the ecosystem (it’s hanging on by a thread) is that both third-party and first-party options work for people. People who are fine with the official Twitter app (based on how they use Twitter) should stick with it. People who like third-party apps often prefer them for reasons that do make sense. It was interesting to read the replies I got on Twitter from people who felt strongly one way or another about third-party apps or using the official Twitter one. A few weeks ago, I took a look at the best Twitter apps for iPhone. The size of the blob is proportional to the magnitude of the amplitude, and the colour is proportional to the phase of the amplitude. One such visualization is the Q-sphere, here each amplitude is represented by a blob on the surface of a sphere. How else could we visualize this statevector? This statevector is simply a collection of four amplitudes (complex numbers), and there are endless ways we can map this to an image. Will both look the same on these separate Bloch spheres, despite being very different states with different measurement outcomes. We store these amplitudes in a 4D-vector like so: Similarly, two bits have four possible states:Īnd to describe the state of two qubits requires four complex amplitudes. We saw that a single bit has two possible states, and a qubit state has two complex amplitudes. Note that you can only take the inner product between two quantum states if they are the same sort of state. However, when you take the inner product of two state vectors, you get a scalar out, something different from the two things that went into the inner product. When you multiply two scalars, you get another scalar out- the same sort of thing as the things you multiplied together. Notice, however, that this is a different sort of multiplication than multiplying two scalars. We’ve talked about multiplying the state vectors by a scalar, but before we didn’t know how to multiply them together. The inner product of a bra and a ket is the first way we’ve seen to multiply two of these state vectors together. At that point, you can manipulate it in algebraic equations the way you would manipulate any other complex number. When you see a bra-ket pair combined like that, the result is a scalar! It may well be a complex number, but it is just a number. The bra vector corresponding to the latter is \(\langle\phi|\), and the inner product of that bra vector with the ket vector \(|\psi\rangle\) is: As an example, suppose you have two different quantum states represented by the ket vector \(|\psi\rangle\) and the ket vector \(|\phi\rangle\). The specific rules for how you calculate the inner product again depend on the detailed representation of the ket vector, so for now we’ll keep them abstract. The notation is meant to help suggest this where there is a straight side, you can stick two of them together. You can always stick a bra vector on to a ket vector. With the introduction of bra vectors, it becomes possible to define a new operation you can do on these things. However, just as a number and its complex conjugate are associated with each other, each ket vector \(|\psi\rangle\) is uniquely associated with a bra vetor \(\langle\psi|\). (You may also turn a column vector into a row vector, if you’re using column vectors to represent ket vectors much more about that later.) \(\langle\psi|\) hψ| is something like the complex conjugat \(|\psi\rangle\), although that’s not really right. Elements of V: : are linear maps from V to C. You always take the complex conjugate of any numbers in the representation going from the ket vector to the bra vector. label in the ket is a vector and the ket itself is that vector Bras are somewhat dierent objects. However, when we do get into specific representations, the rules for converting ket vectors to bra vectors are generally very easy. We haven’t yet looked into any specific representations of ket vectors beyond just the ket vector itself, so at the moment that’s all you need to know. \)įor each ket vector \(|\psi\rangle\), there is a corresponding bra vector \(\langle\psi|\). |
